Electric Vespa Release Date

Electric Vespa Release Date

The question is probably not why one should buy a portable electric scooter but rather why one shouldn't? The only reason we can think of is if you know for a fact, that you will never have to either carry your e-scooter, or put it in the trunk of your car and therefore portability is not a priority for you. In all other cases, a foldable electric scooter is the way to go. Electric kick scooters are all about convenience. Part of that is how easy it is to use and handle your scooter. Max speed, charging time, mile range, battery life, led lights and so on, are all things to consider as much as, portability and weight, and how it folds. Do handlebars fold as well for example?

Once you are used to the pros of the electric kick scooter you will appreciate the possibility of it becoming a very portable and nimble vehicle you can carry around and stow away easy enough. This article will list different folding electric scooters in no specific order but rather based on the features so make sure you know what you will be needing your scooter for and this article will help you make a the right decision.

Cityrider

Battery: Lithium-ion 36V 7.5Ah Suspension: inner suspension tires Folded Dim: 43.3x18.1x47.8 inches

Top Speed: 18 Mph Lights: Front and rear LED Drive: Front Wheel Drive
Weight Limit: 220 lbs Display: Speedometer Battery Position: Under Board

The Cityrider is probably one of the best options out there for those looking for a foldable electric scooter that is portable to a tea and only weighs 28 lbs (12.7 kg).

It is well designed, rides nicely, and does what it is supposed to do brilliantly. Stem folds and attaches to rear bumper, so it is very easy to pick up and carry if needed. Handlebars don't fold though. If your commute is mostly inner city, mile range and max speed is not the utmost priority, then look no further than this.

PROS

  • High Top Speed
  • Turn Signals
  • Unique Design
  • Clever Display

CONS

  • No folding handlebars
  • Limited Range

"Beautiful scooter, great for short commutes
This is one of the nicer looking scooters. Rides great, but it's not very strong. Living in NYC I had to trade up as my commute spans a few miles which this scooter can't complete comfortably.

If your commute is short (under two miles) and you want a lightweight scooter this is for you."

Segway Ninebot ES1

Folding Electric Scooters

Discover the Best Electric Scooters for Your Urban Commute

Motor: 300W brushless hub motor Tires: 10"x 2" honeycomb solid tires
Dimensions: 40.1x16.9x44.5 inches
Battery: Lithium-ion 36V 5.2Ah Suspension: None Folded Dim: 45x17x16 in inches
Range: 12 Miles Brakes: Front Brake & rear step on brake Weight: 27,5 lbs
Top Speed: 15.5 Mph Lights: Front and rear LED Drive: Front Wheel Drive
Weight Limit: 220 lbs Display: Speedometer Battery Position: Under Board

Another lightweight contender in the electric folding scooter world is the Segway Ninebot ES1. At 25 lbs (11.3 kg) it should not be a problem to pick up and carry at convenience. This one folds in a different manner than most other e-scooters as it's folding mechanism is where the board is attached to the stem.

Other scooters usually fold somewhere at the lower part of the stem. It latches onto the rear bumper for extra stability when carried, but it is reported that the latch on the rear bumper, because it is plastic, tends to break. The way the folding is designed is intended for using your foot when folding it by stepping on a small lever. A con here is, that you don't want to do that by mistake while riding. The lever is placed a bit higher up and not exactly close to ones feet while riding but still. Handlebars don't fold which is another con it has to be said if maximum portability is desired.

PROS

  • Good Range
  • Light Weight
  • Modern Design

CONS

  • Handlebars Does Not Fold
  • Clunky Folding Mechanism

Unagi One

Folding Electric Scooters

Discover Safety & Electric Scooters

Motor: 250w or 500w motor Tires: 7.5"x 2" solid tires
Dimensions: 37.7x 16.5 x 43.3 inches
Battery: 33.6 V, 9.0 Ah Suspension:  Inner suspension tires Folded Dim: 37.7x 16.5 x 14.9 inches
Range: 15 Miles Brakes: Electric Brake Weight: 23 / 26.9 lbs
Top Speed: 17 Mph Lights: Front and rear LED Drive: Front & Dual Drive
Weight Limit: 275 lbs Display: Speedometer Battery Position: Under Board

One of the lightest and compact foldable electric scooters on the market now is the Unagi One. It weighs a mere 23 lbs (10.4 kg) and stem folds with a quick press of a button to come level with the board. The dual motor weight about 4 lbs more.

It does not latch onto the rear bumper as some do for more stability when carried, but maybe not so important when considering how light it is. Handlebars does not fold on this so they can get caught in the odd obstacle that might get in the way.

PROS

  • Solid Tires - No punctures!
  • Very Light Weight
  • Unique Looking

CONS

  • Handlebars Does Not Fold

Glion Dolly

Folding Electric Scooters

Discover the Best Electric Scooters for Your Urban Commute

Motor: 250w brushless motor Tires:8"x 2"  honeycomb solid tires
Dimensions: 38 x 45 x 16 inches
Battery: Lithium Ion 36 V, 7.8 Ah Suspension:  Front Fork Suspension Folded Dim: 37 x 12 x 8 inches
Range: 15 Miles Brakes: Anti lock brake & rear foot brake Weight: 28 lbs
Top Speed: 15 Mph Lights: Front and rear tail lights Drive: Rear Wheel
Weight Limit: 255 lbs Display: Led Light Status Battery Position: Under Board

If you are all about maximum practicality at all times, and also demand that from your daily e-scooter commuter, then maybe the Glion Dolly is for you.
Not only is it foldable, but once folded, it has a pull out handle attached underneath the board, similar to that of a travel bag, and at the rear wheel there are two smaller support wheels attached, sticking out to the sides, similar to those you would see on a child's learning bike, so you can drag the scooter behind you in the same way you would a travel bag.

It is a very clever trick indeed. It only weighs 28 lbs (12.7 kg) but if you need to transport it slightly longer distances by hand, this will help. Handlebars fold as well.

PROS

  • Solid Tires - No punctures!
  • Trolly Wheels for Easy Transport

CONS

  • Not the coolest looking scooter on the block

Xiaomi M365

Folding Electric Scooters

Discover the Best Electric Scooters for Your Urban Commute

Motor: 250w brushless motor Tires: 8.5"x 2"  Inflatable Tires
Dimensions: 42.5 x 16.9 x 44.8 inches
Battery: Lithium Ion 36 V, 7.8 Ah Suspension:  None Folded Dim: 42 x 17 x 19 inches
Range: 18 Miles Brakes: Disc Brake & Regenerative Weight: 27 lbs
Top Speed: 15 Mph Lights: Front and rear tail lights Drive: Rear Wheel
Weight Limit: 220 lbs Display: Led Light Status Battery Position: Under Board

Another lightweight option at 28 lbs (12.7 kg) is the Xiaomi M365. It is quite popular even though it does look a bit like the rent scooter we see around.

Stem folds easily with a hatch mechanism, hooks on to the rear bumper, handlebars stay out though. There has been some reporting on a bolt breaking on the folding mechanism when used regularly. Also stem wobble can appear. There is a rubber bushing one can order to help with this issue.

Maybe something to consider if you need to fold it everyday as wear & tear seems to affect this one in this area. It uses Air filled tires which offer a smoother ride but watch out for flat tires.

PROS

  • Got the looks
  • Nice Display

CONS

  • Flat tires are common and difficult to deal with
  • Handle bars does not fold

Swagtron Swagger 5

Dimensions: 42.5 x 16.9 x 44.8 inches
Battery: Lithium Ion 36 V, 7.8 Ah Suspension:  None Folded Dim: 42 x 17 x 19 inches
Range: 18 Miles Brakes: Disc Brake & Regenerative Weight: 27 lbs
Top Speed: 15 Mph Lights: Front and rear tail lights Drive: Rear Wheel
Weight Limit: 220 lbs Display: Led Light Status Battery Position: Under Board

Well....the Swagtron Swagger 5 is basically a rebranded Xiaomi M365.. So without reaping myself what's mentioned above is pretty much the same what I have to say about the Swagger 5. If you go for this one or the Xiaomi will most likely be down to retailer preference or the styling.

GoTrax GXL 2

Folding Electric Scooters

Discover the Best Electric Scooters for Commuting

Motor: 250w brushless motor Tires: 8.5"x 2"  Pneumatic
Dimensions: 43.8 x 17 x 42 inches
Battery: 36V Suspension:  None Folded Dim: 39 x 17 x 19 inches
Range: 9-12 Miles Brakes: Electronic & Disc Weight: 26 lbs
Top Speed: 15 Mph Lights: Front taillight Drive: Rear Wheel
Weight Limit: 275 lbs Display: Led Light Status Battery Position: Under Board

A similar folding system as the Segway although a variation of the theme as this one folds at the lower mounting of the board.

A bit more complicated than the Ninebot as you have to unscrew a safety pin and then pull a lever. It is simple and works fine but, if you are of the "gogogo" type mentality person (read adhd/easily stressed)..... it might become an issue of annoyance after a while. At 27 lbs (12.2 kg) it has to be considered lightweight. Handlebars not foldable unfortunately.

CONS

  • Limited Range
  • Handle bars does not fold

Heavy Duty folding electric scooters

The varieties of kick scooters are rapidly developing in interesting directions, all with the purpose of trying to outdo the competitors and to accommodate customer demand. So for instance, folding scooter electric vehicles are a big part of the e-scooter market. The reason for this is quite understandable and makes sense. In many cases, the e-scooter is as mentioned, the chosen option for daily commutes. That being the case, the user might have to carry it up some stairs, or maybe on a train or metro for parts of the commute, or store away at the office. That's where foldable electric scooters come into play as a big feature on the e-scooter market. Let's take a look at the heavy duty folding electric scooters.

Motor: 2x500w motors Tires: 8" x 3.9" never-flat foam filled
Dimensions: 43.1 x 21.6 x 43.3 inches
Battery:  Lithium-ion 48V 15Ah Suspension:  Front and Rear springs Folded Dim: 43.1 x 8.6 x 16.1 inches
Range: 22 Miles Brakes: Front & Rear Discs Weight:  54 lbs
Top Speed: 26 Mph Lights: Front & Rear LED Drive: Front & Rear Wheel
Weight Limit: 220 lbs Display: Smart Display Battery Position: Under Board

One of the coolest and best folding electric scooters on the market just got better that has pretty much anything you can ask of a folding scooter, cruise control, high top speed and offers a great ride.

At 54 lbs (24.5 kg) the WhideWheel Pro is not exactly lightweight but not super heavy either but offers a great weight capacity. For a more powerful foldable e-scooter such as this, the folding mechanism needs to be sturdy. Lightweight scooters usually have a lever you pull on for quick and simple fold. Here instead is a bigger dial you unscrew, push on it like a button to release stem, fold back and it attaches to the rear bumper. A process that takes slightly longer than a simple latch version, but is instead perhaps more solid.

Handlebars fold as well on this one. This long-range scooter is updated the 2019 version with a bigger lithium ion battery and a better braking system, now with front and back brakes and a brand new led display.

PROS

  • Unique Cruising Style Riding
  • Can Tackle Any Hills
  • Great Speed & Range

CONS

  • Folding Process Takes Somewhat Longer

"Widewheel Pro - AWESOME!
I ordered a Widewheel Pro, package came 3 days earlier than what was predicted on the order page. Being my first scooter, I was very excited. I was not ready for the sheer amount of torque this thing has. I kept it in Eco mode for the first day or so of riding. Coming from an old kickscooter, the weight, throttle and turning took some getting used to, but it only took an hour or two for me. Once I did though, the experience was just excellent.

The build quality is very good, there is a VERY small amount of creaking from the stem, but absolutely zero sense of instability, even going downhill at 25mph. The stock throttle does have a 1 second or less delay depending on speed, but it is a small nitpick compared to how fun the rest of the experience is. I was also pleasantly surprised that it fit in the trunk of my NB Miata. Overall I highly recommend this scooter, and I would definitely purchase again from fluidfreeride!"

Horizon

Motor: 500w Brushless Tires:  8" Rear Solid, 8.5" front Air
Dimensions: 42.5 x 23.2 x 46.8 inches
Battery:  Lithium-ion 48V 10.4Ah / 13Ah Suspension:  Front spring / Rear hydraulic Folded Dim: 38.6 x 7.1 x 14.6 inches
Range: 20miles(10.4Ah) / 25miles(13AH) Brakes: Rear drum brake + Regenerative Weight:  40 lbs (10Ah) / 42 lbs (13Ah)
Top Speed: 23-25 Mph Lights: 3 Front and 2 Rear LEDs Drive: Rear Wheel
Weight Limit: 265 lbs Display: Advanced display with throttle Battery Position: Under Board

Fluid Freerides Horizon is a somewhat heavier e-scooter at 42 lbs (19 kg) that is foldable and which uses a latch type mechanism albeit a really proper clunky piece of metal that clicks distinctly when in the locked riding position.

The upper part of the stem also unlocks and lowers into the lower part in a telescope manner to shorten it considerably for better portability. Handlebars fold as well to further help with creating a compact package as possible for a bigger heavier adult electric scooter such as this. The front wheel is airfilled and the its powered by a brushless hub motor the rear airless wheel.

PROS

  • Long Range
  • Strong Power to weight ratio
  • Very Practical & Foldable

CONS

  • Board deck can be a bit limited for some people.

Beyond my expectations
"I wanted to wait before I did my review. I wasn't really sure what to expect before I received this scooter. Unfortunately there aren't many review videos on YouTube about the Horizon so I was excited, but really I had no idea how awesome this scooter would end up being.

I've put over 100 miles on the Horizon since I received it. I wanted to make sure this scooter performed like the quality it was screaming once I took it out of the box. It's a very good looking scooter. However looks can be deceiving. The real question is how does it perform? It's incredible. Plain and simple. The build quality is exceptional. It exceeded my expectations at every turn. I did reach a top speed of 24mph as promised. I went 25 miles in gear 3 and 30 miles in gear 2. Unfortunately the scooter does slow down going up steep hills but that was to be expected. It is so much fun to ride on the main roads in the rural areas around where I live but it's even more fun to ride around town.

I would absolutely say if you're wanting a scooter that is a step above the entry level scooters like the Segway's and Xiaomi's of the world, then this is the scooter for you. It's not so fast that it would terrify a newer rider, but it has enough speed to satisfy the hobbyists out there. The customer service is also wonderful. Very quick response from Fluid free ride. Once I am ready to upgrade to a more powerful scooter I definitely want to get the Mantis. Hopefully it will be back in stock sometime soon."

Battery: 24V sealed lead acid, Suspension:  None Folded Dim:  40 x 16.5 x 16 inches
Range: 40 minutes riding time Brakes: Rear Hand-operated Weight:  42 lbs
Top Speed: 15 Mph Lights: None Drive: Rear Wheel
Weight Limit: 220 lbs Display: None Battery Position: Under Board

In all honesty, here is an option of a folding electric scooter where I feel the level of engineering does not give me the utmost confidence as far as folding scooters go.

You unscrew a bigger nut at the front of the stem that once unscrewed, is still attached via a small cable. Think of it as similar to a cap filler for cars. You unscrew it and the cap it is still attached to the chassis. The design of the whole thing does seem like a weak point, however, Handlebars don't fold.

PROS

  • Big Chunky Tires
  • Solid Frame

CONS

  • Very limited Power to weight ratio
  • More of a kid/teenage scooter

Offroading folding electric scooters

If you plan to use your e-scooter more as a weekend warrior and go offroading, it will pay to go for some of the higher quality heavier foldable scooters, where the folding mechanism is designed to withstand the high speed thrashing better than maybe a lighter portable folding scooter, purely intended to be used on smoother surfaces and light enough to carry with ease.

Wolf Warrior

Folding Electric Scooters

Discover the Wolf Warrior

Motor: 2x 1200W base / 5400W peak Tires:  11" tubeless tires
Dimensions: 49.2 x 24.6 x 49.2 inches
Battery:  LG Li-ion 60V 35Ah Suspension:  Front hydraulic / Rear springs Folded Dim:  59 x 11 x 19 inches
Range:  70 miles (eco / single drive) Brakes: Front and Rear Hydraulic Weight:  101 lbs
Top Speed: 50 Mph Lights: Front / Side/ Rear LEDs Drive: Front & Rear Wheel Drive
Weight Limit: 330 lbs Display: Minimotors Display / throttle Battery Position: Under Board

The Wolf Warrior is not intended as a commuter, but portability is still important as you most likely will haul it to your nearest motocross park or similar for some fun.

Proper pins/bolts and latches make sure that this monster is foldable in a way that does not compromise ride quality when flying through the air and landing heavily. It does weigh 101 lbs (45.8 kg) after all. Like most extreme scooters, handlebars do not fold and stem does not retract. Folding mechanism is mounted at the front of the board in a clever way to make sure risk for stem wobble is nil.

PROS

  • Very High Top Speed
  • Fantastic Suspension

CONS

  • Not one you carry around

"Having pure fun
Hi to everyone is thinking about buying a scooter my name is Alphonso and 57 years old and me and my wife decided to purchase scooters. Our plan was to use them to do sightseeing for tank of gas get a ways. Since they arrived I must say we both fallen in love with having scooter.

Purchased the Kaabo Wolf Warrior without ever having ridden a scooter and I must say it is powerful it is not a toy. It is sheer Bliss and fun to ride feels like you're on a snowboard or skis carving down streets, sidewalks and off road trails. The real surprise was the speed and distance claims are true. With a full face helmet and motorcycle riding jacket with pads I've achieved 55 miles an hour and distances of about 25 miles. I was running and gunning before getting back to the house and putting the scooter up the power meter said I had 45% charge left. Now one of the other reasons to own a scooter is for short commutes to grocery stores banks and visiting family and friends. Last but not least Eco friendly part of using an electric mode of transportation saving the planet one fun ride at a time.
Yours truly,
Alphonso happy camper"

Motor: 2x 60V 1000W BLDC Tires: 10"x2.5" air tires

Battery:  LG Li-ion 60V 24.5Ah Suspension:  Front and Rear Spring Arms Folded Dim:  49 x 24 x 19 inches
Range:  45+ miles (eco / single drive)* Brakes: Dual Disc (full hydraulic) Weight:  65 lbs
Top Speed: 40 Mph Lights: White front/side & Rear Red LEDs Drive: Front & Rear wheel drive
Weight Limit: 265 lbs Display: Minimotors display / throttle Battery Position: Under Board

The Mantis Pro is one of my personal favorites as it is so good at so many things. Yes it is a heavier electric scooter at 65 lbs (29.4 kg) but still a long way from the Wolf Warriors territory.

Dual quick-release levers, similar to those you find on a bicycle makes the process of folding the stem quite uncomplicated. Once down it hooks onto the rear bumper to secure it properly before lifting. Handlebars don't fold though.

This one can be used as a daily commuter and the process of folding the stem is quick enough even if you do it everyday a couple of times. The pneumatic tires offer a great ride along with the fantastic suspension and even at maximum speed you feel very safe.

PROS

  • Very Long Range & Great Speed
  • Smooth Ride With Brilliant Suspension

CONS

  • You can carry it - but it still very heavy

You need to know
I'm just here to be apart in the 5 star reviews. I have recieved excellent service on numerous occasions. Adam has snappy response time and his answers always produce results. I have the mantis I commute daily to and from work about 6.5 miles. I feel like the coolest guy out there on this silent beast. Fluidfreeride has not only earned my respect, they've earned loyalty.

Dualtron Thunder

Folding Electric Scooters

Discover the Best Electric Scooters for Heavy Adults

Motor:  2x 1200W base / 5400W peak Tires: 11-inch wide pneumatic tires
Dimensions: 49 x 24 x 50 inches
Battery:  LG Li-ion 60V 24.5Ah Suspension:  Adjustable front & back suspension Folded Dim: 48 x 12 x 21 inches
Range:  75 mile (eco / single drive)* Brakes: Front & Back ABS Brakes Weight: 95 lbs
Top Speed: 50 Mph Lights: Front/side & Rear Red LEDs Drive: Front & Rear wheel drive
Weight Limit: 265 lbs Display: Minimotors display / throttle Battery Position: Under Board

The Dualtron Thunder is a proper piece of kit and can be a competitor to the Mantis for best folding electric scooter honors. But it falls into the heavyweight category at 95 lbs (43 kg).

Handlebars also fold which can help when you need to manhandle it into the trunk of a car. When thinking about the best folding electric scooters neither of the three mentioned above are what comes to mind if you were to ask me but as they are foldable they are of course included.

But like the Dualtron or any scooter mentioned above their primary benefits are not that they are foldable electric scooter, I would sat that is just a great benefit. If you want to read more about these scooters go check out our off road electric scooter guide.

PROS

  • Very Long Range & Great Speed
  • ABS Brakes are brilliant!

CONS

  • Very Heavy and not something you carry around

Buying Considerations for Commuting

Folding Electric Scooters

When buying a folding electric scooter it's very common that it will be used for commuting and the folding scooters become a popular choice as they tend to be easy to carry with you, which is completely understandable.

However, most of the electric scooters that are popular are in fact foldable these days unless you're thinking of the old school "vespa" type scooters. If you will be commuting, the best advice to date is looking at the specs of the scooter, if it folds, great! But look at the range, 250w motor is usually what you get amongst the smaller and light weight foldable scooters) but you might want some extra power depending on road conditions and when you take your own weight into consideration.

Charge time and how far you get on a single charge is something to consider as well, do you need to charge it while you're at work or can you drive it back and forth?

Portable Scooter Convenience versus Performance

Folding Electric Scooters

As mentioned a bit in the segment above you do of course sacrifice certain aspects when choosing a folding electric scooter for portable purposes but it also seem to be a defining feature for the electric scooters (for now). I wouldn't be surprised if the future will take a step towards non folding electric scooters as well you might find that you never really fold your scooter, you just drive it and park it just like a normal bike or e-bike.

When designing and creating a folding electric scooter you need moving parts, the more moving parts the more complicated and less sturdy the entirety of the design will be, which is why I wouldn't be surprised at all to see more and more non foldable scooters appear on the market.

However, as with all mechanical things, there are pros and cons, and all mechanisms are subject to wear and tear and can in some cases affect the riding experience once you've folded it many times. Folding design can vary and it can pay to do some research into the different foldable electric scooters out there before deciding on which one is the best option for you.
